Q1: In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Task: Select 10 stills/ images from your Music Video and the 2 ancillary
tasks (you cannot annotate ancillary tasks just yet obviously). Annotate each
one of them in Photoshop or Powerpoint to indicate which conventions you have
used at which point. Explain which conventions you followed/challenged and
how/why? Use Goodwin's 6 points as a guide here.
Goodwins Points
·
Music videos demonstrate genre
characteristics eg. Stage performance in metal videos, dance routine for a
boy/girl band, story of outsider that the world doesn’t understand- indie)
·
Sound and vision. There is a
relationship between lyrics and visuals. There is also a relationship between
music and visuals.
·
The video will have a certain ‘look’
or visual style that is used specifically to generate a star image: *group has
to have a consistent style. *star image essential.
·
Voyeurism; there is a frequent
reference to notion of looking, and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the
female body. Voyeur; gets enjoyment from watching.
·
Intertextuality; there is often
intertextual reference (to films, TV programs, other music videos etc).
1.
Here we used a medium side tracking shot at the beginning of the video.
This immediately draws the viewers to the artist and helps them identify to his
look and style. We wanted the artist to have a casual, trendy up to date style,
concentrating on following goodwins point of portraying a star image we dressed
him in a labelled jumper, jeans and trainers, which has been a typical 2012
fashion trend for teenage & young men.
2. One of Goodwins conventions is for the music video to convey genre characteristics. Our song 'Beneath youre beautiful' is a pop ballad so our convention was to use lots of fades and dissolves in editing. In this scene of the female artist singing we used a white wall to film against and filmed the verse from a range of angles and merged them in with the tool on photoshop. This gave more depth and movement to the music video.

3. We followed the convention of lyrics matching visuals half way through
the song. At the point of "You built your wall so high" we had a long
shot of sam in the dark and as the lyric said "high" he put his head
up and looked to the sky and the camera tilted upwards. I think this was a
really useful shot as it adds movement and more fun to the video.
4.We learnt it was important for the audience to identify with the artists, especially thats its a key demand from record labels and companies; therefore we used a range of close up shots of both artists in our video encouraging identification keeping the focus on the artists.
5. Shot of camera panning down on Jess
With reference to voyeurism and attention to the female body, we chose an attractive female to star in our video. We used a range of shots in her scenes, many close up and long shots but also panning downwards from head to toe. This encourages males to enjoy watching and females to look up to the artist with inspiration from looks, costume etc.
6. One technique which is very important in the making of music videos was cutting clips on the beat. We successfully did this throughout the video. I feel the clip that its most noticed is this Scene where Jess walks past Sam, she starts to walk with the beat as well which makes the video seem more upbeat and also shows more strongly that she walks past ignoring him.
7. Conventionally pop videos require a lot of camera movement in order to keep the audience entertained and keep the video interesting. In this shot we use panning from left to right of the two artsits singing the chorus together giving the video movement and showing the two artists together.
8.
Nearer to the end of the video, we start to communicate a storyline throughout the video. Conventionally in pop videos the lyrics suggest a story so the video creates scenes to communicate it. Our song suggests the boy and girl and singing about each other therefore we started to film them on a date to show that the outcome at the end of the song results in the two falling for each other.
9. Again, demands of the record label involve close ups of the artist. In this scene we used a close up of Sam singing his chorus, we concentrated heavily on lighting to highlight his face causing the audience to identify with the audience. The black background matched the slow tempo of the song and keeps the focus on Sam.
10. Challanging conventions, nearer the end of the music video, we used a range of scenes and merged them all in together on photoshop. We used a close up shot of Sams face on top of a long shot of Jess standing, then faded sam out then faded in a different long shot of him standing. Although this is really uncommon and unconventional in pop ballad music videos, I personally think it works well and communicates the storyline of the two artists getting to know and like each other.

Q2: How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
Task: Create a Prezi which makes clear links between your 3 products.
Help: Consider to what extent you have created an effective promotional package for your artist. How have you used mise en scene, motifs, themes, composition etc to present a particular image of your artist? What do you think the expectations of your target audience are for each of your products and the package as a whole? Do you think you have met these expectations?

I made a Prezi to talk about the links between our music video, digipak and magazine advert. I think the expectations from our target audience is that we bring something new and different to the industry, but to also create an artist who will fit in today sterotype and expectation of music artists. I feel we have created a video that will entertain and intrigue our audience. Our two ancillary tasks link together very well with the use of imagery, style and colour, which will be reconised and praised by our target audience.
Q3: What have you learned from your audience feedback?
Task: Create a director’s commentary which includes clips from the music video and ancillary tasks, as well as vox-pop presentations of audience feedback.
Help: Consider all the forms of audience feedback you have received as well as all methods and contexts for gathering it. Start by making a list of all of the types of feedback you have received, the context in which you received it, methodology and whether you found it useful/ whether you acted on it:
eg. Rough Cut Feedback/ other group feedback on blog/ qualitative/ we added more filters to the video to add genre authenticity.

In this task I will consider our pitch feedback, roughcut feedback and final cut feedback, along with the comments we got on our digipak and magazine cover designs.
In class we watched each others rough cuts on the macs and filled in a tick list as we watched in giving feedback. This really helped as it got a range of opinions. Each group also left a comment each of constructive criticism. Our rough cut video was very unfinised but the feedback really helped us notice more parts to improve and drew attention to what else we needed to include.
Comments we recieved we were already aware that we needed to improve on were:
1. Fill in blank gap, get all the footage you need
2. Include more camera angles
3. Include more camera movement
However, we did get some really useful points that we hadnt really payed much attention to:
1. Some shots were too long, became boring after a while
2. Cut the kiss clip straight after - can tell they move away
3. Improve female artists lip syncing
4. Need fewer static shots
Getting qualitative, specific and detailed feedback from our class really helped us decide and plan what we needed to do in the final few weeks before the roughcut deadline to improve our video. I really enjoyed getting feedback from our class as they are experienced in making music videos too, and also they are in our target audience range.
Using the rough cut feedback, we took certain actions:
- Fill in blank gap - Filmed a lot more lip syncing scenes throughout the whole song
- More camera movement & angles - Refilmed the same verse roughly 3 times using a range of angles and camera movement which we could then edit into one verse in final cut
- Shots too long - Filmed a storyline to cut from lip syncing the whole way though & edited in a range of clips with angles and camera movement in order to keep the audience entertained
- Cut the kiss clip - We took this clip out as we didnt feel it worked well with the storyline or the song type, and filmed a date scene instead
After the final cut and ancillary task deadline we did another feedback lesson, In this we all sat around the room and watched each groups video together and each person in the class gave a postive/constructive comment.
We did get a few comments that were also mentioned in the roughcut feedback such as: some lip syncing still needs to improve, chorus needs more impact, song slow and boring in parts - I feel we did improve on these points since the roughcut feedback however they definitely could have done with improving.
In result of the final cut feedback we got mostly really positive feedback which i was pleased with:
- lighting is correct tone for video
- variation of shots - keeps it interesting & conventional
- faded shots are conventional and effective
- tone & clips in video reflected the tempo of song in slow parts
- star persona is clear throughout the video
I was pleased that a class member mentioned star persona as i feel its something we focussed on a lot when we refilmed due to the fact we didnt pay much attention to it up to the point of the rough cut.
This was the first time the class had seen our digipak and magazine advert. Comments we got were: It looks very professional, The black and white pictures of the artist are simple but effective, Digipak needed a variety of shots and costume change
I agree with all the comments about our digipak and magazine advert. Im glad our class liked it but i do feel that the ancillary tasks were quite rushed for our group as we were quite unprepared and the deadline came around quicker than we expected. Although they did need improving, i feel we produced professional products and communicated a clear star persona throughout.
Below i embeded a prezi to show screen grabs of our video, digipak and magazine as it refers to our text. Also two xtranormal videos made up of rough cut and final cut comments.

Q4: How did you use new media
technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
Task: Create a video presentation which discusses the technologies you
used at each stage of the project. This video needs to be different from the
Director’s commentary in terms of its presentation and content i.e. Presented
as a ‘How to use…’/ Teaching (in character?) style of video that could then be
used as a future teaching aid. For homework for Wednesday, you need to
write the script for this and try to collect relevant screen grab images.
Choose 3 technologies that you used and explain how you used them or you
can
Help: Go through each stage of your project and make notes on which new technologies you used, for what purpose and how useful each technology was in terms of achieving your goals. Were there particular types of technology that you found particularly useful? Were all of the technologies you used digital? How did the technologies work in combination with each other?

Photoshop
In order to edit the photos of our
artist for the digipak and magazine advert we used Photoshop. This was really
useful to experiment with as it has so many different styles and tools that you
can use. One tool we used a lot on our artist was the spot tool, we wanted his
skin to look perfect to make him more appealing, especially for the close ups
so we thought it was important to get rid of any blemishes. We also used the
saturation, brightness and contrast and colour corrector tools as we wanted to
get the right tone of colour. To create the background of the album cover and
magazine advert we layered on top of the original background by using the blur
and dodge tool which created a gritty effect which we then blended. This was my
favourite technique as it looked really professional and matched the urban look
we were aiming to create.

Final Cut
Final cut was really important in the
making of our music video. We used it to load clips then delete what we didn’t
need. We then would put a certain clip on the line and match it with the
lyrics, using the marker tool really helped match lip syncing and we used this
thoroughly in the process of our video. It is conventional in the pop music
genre to use a lot of fading clips, so we used the tool which fades one clip into
another. This looked really effective and made our video more interesting. As
some of our clips lacked movement, we used an editing style called key framing which made the clip
look like it was moving; this was difficult to do at first but worked well.
Finally, we used the colour editing tools to make some scenes brighter and
better lit, and also used the speed up/slow down setting in a few clips to
match the pace of the song.
Blogger
Blogger is not something we have used
before in media so it was a new technology this year. I really enjoyed using it
as it helped us keep track of all our work and what process we were in. Not
only was it good for writing notes and planning, but we could involve so many
technologies on there. Youtube videos that inspired us could be embedded and
then talked about which gave visual and written info, but we could also add
photos, powerpoints, prezis etc. I think I really benefitted from being able to
incorporate technologies into blog posts as it can sometimes extend what you
are explaining and can reference throughout. Also the benefit of being able to
do group posts and individual posts worked well as then it is easy to remember
what you discussed and what your own idea was.

*clip of sam pointing up as the camera goes up*
In this clip, according to one of Goodwins we conformed to the conventions of a pop music video and how there is a relationship between lyrics and visuals. This is has been used in this clip in a literal way, as the lyrics say 'youve built your walls so high' the camera angle literally goes high???. This works well in the music video as it gives it movement. Movement being another convention of a music video, you tend to see a lot of tracking and panning in pop music videos which is out chosen genre.
*shot of close up of both male and female artist*
Another convention we have used in this music video is, another one of Goodwins points, the demand of the record label will include a need for lots of close ups of the artist. This is because they want the audience to get to know the artist and be able to see their emotions. We included this in out music video because our song is very emotional and if we didnt have close ups showing his expresseion then the audience might not understand how he is feeling. also without having a range of shots like mid shots, close ups and side angles, it will make the video not interesting for the viewer and we wouldnt be able to show the artist as much.
*shot where girl is singing and it cuts on the beat*
Cutting on the beat is a big convention of pop music videos. in our music video we conformed to this by cutting on the beat where appropriate and where we thought made a impact on telling the story. Cutting on the beat makes the music video seem more neat and organised and easier to understand, it also matched the music type making the video more appropriate with the song it is accompanying.
*panning shot of the two singing face to face*
Using a panning shot in our music video is again using the conventions of a music video, using movement in a music video makes one shot more interesting by having movement inovolved. This panning shot works well where we have placed it because it is the start of them singing together and flows well from the shot before.
*shot of them sat down at dinner*
Telling a story through a music video, helping to tell the story of the lyrics is another use of a convention in a music video, throughout our music video we have only used short slips to help tell the story, this works well with the lyrics as it illistrates them well and adds a bit more interest to the music video instead of just having lip syncing and plain shots of the artist.
*shot of female artist stood in dark ontop of car park*
We used voyerism in our music video, this is a convention of a music video. We used an attractive femlae artist to attract the male side of our target audience, as this is quite an emotional feminine song ang there is an attractive male main artist, there are many reasons for females to watch this music video. By using an attractive female artist also, this will give males a reason to watch the music video widening our audience wanting to watch it, and also enjoying it.
*male artist singing on his own with black background*
Another use of a convention, is again one of Goodwins points, there is a relationship between music and visuals. In the music video, as the music goes pretty much silent and all you can really hear is the male artist singing with quite a raw tone to his voice, the visuals is a close up of him, to show his emotion, and a plain black background, showing his isolation to match the sound of the song at this point.
*shot of male artist sways and doesnt cut on the beat*
This is an example of where we challenged the conventions of a music video, as previously mentions we have used cutting on the beat throughout the music video apart form at one point. the music clearly cuts and we leave the male artist up and let him slowly fade away, this looks effective as it makes the music video less predictabe and and more interesting for the viewer. In my opinion this works really well and flows well with the next clip leading in the the female.

Task 4
Photoshop
In creating the acillary products we used Photoshop quite a lot, it helped us create a certain look that we wanted for our artist to be portrayed as, it helped us to create a certain style to our images and give them an urban feel, one way we did this was by using the burning tool on the background to make the background clearer that the image was taken on the streets. We experimented with photoshop to create our desired look and in my opinion, i think we created it well as it also made an impact on creating our star persona. It also helped us create our star as the 'ideal' by getting rid of any blemishes and making him look the best he can. We saturated the images we used on the inside of our digipak the make our product in the style of rihannas which is what we were aiming for.
Blogger
This was a good technology to use as it helped us as a group and as individulas to track the progress of our work, and any ideas and videos we found we could post and always refere back to without having to take ages searching for them. It also helped us to brainstorm ideas for our music video and ancillary task with things such as different editing types. s it was a new technology and something we hadnt used before it also made it more interesting. It helped us us a group to help us remember the things we have spoke about and helped us as individuals because the ideas we could come up with at home we could then post and talk about as a group without forgetting.
Youtube
This technology was a great help in both the music video and the ancillary tasks. It helped us in the music video as it told us different lighting techniques which we needed help on because we wanted our music video to be in the dark and lighting in the dark is something we hadnt done before. Watching videos on youtube helped us to create the desicred effect we wanted our lighting to create. Aswell as lighting in the dark it also helped us with lighting inside and how to make it look more preffesional. Another way Youtube helped us with our music video is that we could watch different videos in the same genre to find out the conventions that we needed to put in our video, it also gave us ideas on what we could but in our video and different scenes. Youtube helped us with our ancillary tasks because it showed us how to create different effects using photoshop, this helped us a lot with creating different looks on our images.

dodging and burning
This video inspired us when editing the main photograph of our artist for our digipak and magazine advert on photoshop. We really liked the effect it created which helped us to give our image more depth.

original edited
From watching the youtube tutorial, dodging gave us the darker effect at the top and bottom of the image. This works well because it gives the background more depth, and gives the image an urban feel which fits with our star persona.
Evaluation
Q1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Task 1
Goodwin's points:
1.) Music Videos Demonstrate Genre Characteristics. (e.g stage performance in rock video, dance routine for boy/girl band)
2.) There Is A Relationship Between Lyrics and Visuals. (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting.)
3.) There Is A Relationship Between Music and Visuals. (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting.)
4.) The Demands Of The Record Label Will Include The Need For Lots Of Close-Ups Of The Artist and The Artist May Develop Motifs Which Recur Across Their Work. ( a visual style)
5.) There Is Frequently Reference To Notion Of Looking (screens within screens, telescopes, etc.) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
6.) There is Often Intertextual Reference. (to films, T.V programs, other music videos.)
Throughout our Music Video and the two ancillary tasks, I feel that we used a range of conventions typical to the music genre of our chosen song, referring back to Goodwin's points.
1)
The first shot in our music video is a panning shot of a city, straight away establishing where the artist is from/living. Which links to the urban feel we are trying to give our artist/music video. Even though our genre is a pop ballad we want the artist to come across urban, up to date and trendy. Which is why we establish the city setting straight away, this also works well as the beginning of the song is just music which is a perfect time to put it in.
2)
As soon as the lyrics start in the song we have a medium close up of the artist lip syncing. Which is typical of the pop genre. From this shot the audience have a clear view of what the artist looks like and what their style is. We wanted the artist to look casual but at the same time we wanted him to appeal to our target audience by creating a star persona. We did this by using a popular branded jumper, jeans and trainers for his costume in this shot. This will appeal to teenage boys who may aspire to be like him, it will also make him look desirable to teenage girls. For the background of this shot we used a plain wall and then used torches and gels to create the different lighting effects. We used a variation of close up shots of the artist throughout the music video to sell him as a person and making him appeal to an audience.
3)
In this shot the lyrics were 'You've carried on so long you couldn't stop it you tried..' so here we created a scene where Sam is sitting watching Jess as she walks away, this is a typical convention used in this genre of music- Lyrics matching the visuals. As in this scene the male artist is singing, we used a torch to light his face, therefore he is the main focus of the shot. This shot is also an example of cutting on the beat, Jess walks onto the shot just as the beat changes, I feel this technique is very important when making a music video.
4)
This image is used throughout the chorus of our music video, we used two torches to light up the sides of his face and set it at night so the background was pitch black, therefore the light really outlines the artists face, making him stand out and also giving the shot a professional look and feel. This close up shot helps to generate a star image as he is again wearing a popular branded product, the shot makes him look desirable to girls. This shot also meets the demands of the record label as it is a close up of the artist which is shown more than once in the music video, promoting the artist.
5)
In this shot we followed the convention of the lyrics matching the visuals. When the artist sings "You built your wall so high" we used a long shot of Sam standing in the dark and as the lyric said "high" he put his head up and looked to the sky and the camera tilted upwards and then came back down to a long shot of Jess, which linked her to the lyrics as that is who he is singing about. This shot added movement to the video typical of a music video that is telling the story of the lyrics.
6)
The genre of our music video is a pop ballad and one of Goodwin's points is to convey genre characteristics so after looking into music videos of this genre in more depth we found that they use a wide range of different shot types and angles, also different editing techniques are used throughout, in the first shot we used a medium close up panning shot of the female artist which then dissolved in to a medium shot of the artist from front view. We did this to make sure we had a wide variety of shots throughout this verse as it was quite long and we wanted to keep movement in the video and keep it interesting, we edited this shot using final cut. We wanted to keep the shot simple so we filmed on a plain white background keeping the artist as the main focus .
7)
This shot in the music video matches the lyrics 'you built your walls so high' so as the word 'high' is sung the artist lifts his head up, again matching the lyrics to the visuals. We slowed this clip down to make sure Sam lifting his head was the same duration as the words being sung. The use of the torch lighting his face is to keep him the main focus of this shot, meeting the demands of a record label, we used a range of close ups of the artist throughout.
8)
In this shot the camera is panning down the artists body from head to toe, this is an example of voyeurism paying close attention to the female body, this shot will attract a male audience as it encourages them to enjoy the video. We used a pretty female to star in our video therefore she is desirable to males but will also attract a female audience as they may aspire to be like her or look up to her, paying attention to costume in particular.

This close up panning shot of the two artists together shows the love interest between the two of them as they sing to each other, this is very typical of a pop genre music video as it tells a story. It will really appeal to our target audience as they will be interested in what happens between the two artists, in particular this will appeal to females as the relationship shown in the music video is a 'perfect' relationship.

This is a screen shot of our digipak, we edited all of this using Photoshop, we looked at a range of other artists digipak's and got inspiration from Rhiannas new album, where the photographs were black and white on the inside and color on the outside. We wanted to make sure that our digipak linked to the video and album cover so the whole project comes together well. We linked them by using a photograph of London city for the back of the album keeping it personal to the artist as he is a city boy, in the music video we used a panning shot of a city as well, linking the two. We wanted to continue the urban feel throughout therefore we took our photographs against a brick wall and edited using the burn tool. We found that most album cover are quite simple so we wanted to stick to the conventions so we just had a photo, the name of the artist and the name of the album on the front. We kept the costume very casual and he is wearing something that our target audience would wear, making him very appealing as a person.
Q2: How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
Q3: What have you learned from your audience feedback?
Task 3
Throughout our music video project we have been given different types of feedback, we have had a lot of positive feedback but we have also been given points we can improve on, helping us to make our project appeal more to a target audience.
The two main pieces of feedback we received were on our rough cut video where we showed it to our class and they told us what bits they liked and the what could be improved. The same applies for our final video and our two ancillary task.
Rough cut feedback:
-Fill in blank gap, make sure that you get all the footage you need.
-Make a few more cuts.
-Fewer static shots.
-Lighting was really good/well thought out.
-Just fill in blank spaces and improve girls lip syncing.
-More camera movements and angles.
-Cut the kiss scene before the actors walk away.
-Fill blanks, otherwise best we've seen.
-Shots were really good, but some were a bit too long.
The main faults we picked out from the feedback we were given was that there were too many long duration shots and not enough camera angles, shot types, edits etc. So we decided that the longer shots needed a lot more movement in order to make the video interesting. We then decided to re-film some shots and film them at different angles so we could cut between a range of different shots. We also found we needed to improve on the female artists lip syncing so we re-filmed her singing shots so we could match the lyrics and music correctly.
Final music video and Ancillary tasks feedback:
- I liked the digi-pak and magazine advert, they look really professional
-The lighting in the video went well with the tone of the song
-The magazine advert and the digi-pak were simple but really effective, I liked the use of black and white images
-I like the variation of different shots in the video
-I liked the fact you had scenes of the boy and girl separately
-I liked the fading transitions, it looks professional
-When the song changed to the chorus the lip syncing needed more impact as the song got louder and more upbeat
-The digi-pak needs more variety of shots, change of outfit
-The magazine advert has all the information you need on it
-The star persona is clear throughout all three tasks
From comparing the feedback we got from our rough cut video and then looking at the feedback from our final video, I feel we improved on all the negative comments made as we received completely different feedback, we had a lot more positive comments, overall I am happy with the feedback given.
Q4: How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
Task 4
Throughout the project we have used a range of different technologies to design and make our products. The 3 main ones are:
-Final Cut
-Photoshop
-YouTube
Each technology has really helped to improve our project.
Final Cut
We used this technology the most, this is where we added our clips after filming, we decided which ones were worth keeping and then were able to place the right clips in the right order to go with the music. We were able to match the lyrics in the song to the clips of our artists singing them by using markers to find the exact place. We were able to shorten clips by cutting them which created a good range of short duration shots, adding depth to the video giving it a diverse range of editing styles. We were able to edit shots using 'fade' which enabled us to have shots crossing over each other, I feel this really gave the video a professional feel. We also edited some of our shots on final cut using the brightness and contrast, this helped to make some of our shots really stand out, especially the shots of the male artist therefore we were keeping him the main focus of the video. We used a technique called 'key frame' which enabled us to give a static shot the illusion of panning. We used this edit a couple of times in our video were we felt it needed a bit more movement.
YouTube
YouTube was a big help with our project, we used it for a variety of different reasons. When planning are video there was a number of different things to take into account, one of the main ones was lighting. We used YouTube to find a tutorial that would help us light the artist when we were filming at night, but we still wanted to keep it quite natural looking, therefore we were able to figure out what equipment was needed to create this effect and do it properly. The tutorial also showed us the effects you can make using colored filters which we then used in our final video to add different shades of lighting, we used blue and red filters which link to the colour scheme used on our digipak and magazine advert. We also used YouTube tutorials when editing our digipak and magazine advert photographs on Photoshop. We wanted to use a really good editing style that would really make the main image stand out so we found a tutorial on dodging and burning, which we used for the photograph on our magazine advert and album cover. We have used YouTube to upload our rough cut and final video to get the embed code to then upload to our blog.
Photoshop
We used Photoshop to edit all of our pictures of the artist. We used a range of different editing styles to make our photographs look professional and stand out. For the close up shots of our artist we cleared his skin up so it looked perfect which is typical of any photographs used for album covers. We also used it to edit the photo for our magazine advert, using the burn tool, giving the photo a really urban/rough feel which is what we were aiming for when creating our star persona. Overall Photoshop helped us to create a particular style and feel throughout our project.
Here I have created a step by step tutorial of how to get clear skin when editing a photo with Photoshop.
